Americium-241 (241Am, Am-241) is an isotope of americium. Like all isotopes of americium, it is radioactive, with a half-life of 432.2 years. 241 Am is the most common isotope of americium as well as the most prevalent isotope of americium in nuclear waste.

The neutron energy spectrum of an 241Am-Li radionuclide source has been measured in a low scatter room at the National Physical Laboratory, using a variety of spectrometers namely: a Bonner sphere The 241Am/B spectrum has a peak position lower than that of Burger's results (2-6 MeV compared with 2-9 MeV) but there is no evidence for similar fine structure as with a41Am/F. A prominent shoulder is found in the 4-4-5 MeV region. (3) z41Am/Be: "Be + a --> 12C + n -f- 5-71 MeV. A typical spectrum is illustrated in Fig. 4. The 239 PuBe neutron spectrum was measured in an open environment, while the 241 AmBe neutron spectrum was measured in a closed environment. Gamma-ray spectra were measured using a NaI (Tl) scintillator using the same experimental conditions for both sources.

Gamma ray spectra of strong 241Am sources may reveal information about the source composition as there may be other radioactive nuclides such as progeny and radioactive impurities present. In this work the possibility to use gamma spectrometry to identify inherent signatures in 241Am sources in order to differentiate sources from each other, is investigated.
